HCM CITY (VNS) — HCM City will use more than 2,100sq.m of land in the Tao Dan Park in District 1 to build the Ben Thanh-Tham Luong metro route, often called Route No 2.

As many as 33 trees on the land will be affected, and some of them are ancient and valuable trees.

Cutting down the trees in the city's centre was an important work which needed careful research for the best project and ideas from experts, said a leader of the District 1 People's Committee.

The District 1 People's Committee asked the municipal Department of Transport to join hands with concerned organisations to set up a project on the affected trees.

The metro route No 2, which is nearly 20km long, is one of eight metro routes which had been approved by the municipal People's Committee.

The first phase of the metro route No 2, which is 11.3km in length, is worth more than VND26.1 trillion (US$1.16 billion).

The second phase will be conducted when enough funds are collected.

Foreign banks have now agreed to sponsor the project with more than $720 million in funds. — VNS
