Stem cells lacking for blood disease treatment

More than 750 international and national leading medical experts met in the central city of Da Nang recently to discuss stem cell usage for surgery.

Viet Nam has nine clinics that can perform surgery with stem cells. However, a bank for such cells has not been set up.

The expense of using stem cells to treat some disease is unaffordable for many patients.

Leather, shoe firms rely on imports

The Vietnamese leather and shoe manufacturing industry has low competitive ability as it must import 70 per cent of its raw materials.

Only 25-30 per cent of these enterprises can design and produce their own products. The remaining 70-75 per cent have foreign partners.

HCM City has 520 leather and shoe manufacturing companies.

Twelve per cent are big companies, and 55 per cent are small- and medium-sized enterprises. Thirty-three per cent are "very small", with only a few employees.
