HCM CITY — As many as 815 enterprises in HCM City owe more than six months of social insurance payments, while thousands of enterprises owe two months.
The total owed is VNĐ1.8 trillion (US$77.4 million), according to the HCM City office of the Việt Nam Social Security agency.
The Mai Linh Group, for example, owes more than VNĐ100 billion and its Mai Linh Southern Joint Stock Company at least VNĐ53 billion.
In addition, Nam Phương Co Ltd owes VNĐ28 billion, Saigon Post and Telecommunication Services Joint-Stock Co VNĐ24 billion, Chợ Lớn Taxi Co Ltd VNĐ16 billion and Saigon Petro VNĐ14 billion.
The Social Security Agency and the city’s Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs have carried out inspections of the companies but the enterprises refused to pay.
Nguyễn Thị Thu, deputy chairwoman of the office, said that thousands of newly established enterprises were being set up each year, but some of them went bankrupt or relocated.
Some of them did not pay social insurance because they were experiencing business difficulties, while others said they had fewer workers than the real figure, Thu said.
In March, the social security agency gave police a file to investigate Nam Phương Co Ltd for evading social insurance payments. The authorities will investigate other cases as well. — VNS
