HAI PHONG (VNS) — Two modern patrol boats were handed over to the departments of public security of the northern port city of Hai Phong and the neighbouring Quang Ninh province yesterday.
The boats, presented by the public security ministry's general police department, are the most modern vehicles available to the waterway traffic police forces at present.
Each vessel, 20.8m long and 4.76m wide, has a deadweight of 4.74 tonnes, engine power of 1,300 horsepower and can carry 20 persons at a time.
Colonel Nguyen Ngoc Tuan, deputy director of the road and railway traffic police department, said that equipping the force with modern patrol boats was an urgent priority, amid the development of complicated waterway crimes, especially those involving illegal exploitation of natural resources.
About 70 per cent of the boat-building costs were covered by the service taxes paid by vehicle owners, he added.
More coastal provinces and cities will be provided similar patrol boats in the future, he noted, adding that a third boat will be given to the police in the central Quang Ngai province. — VNS
