HA NOI (VNS) — The National Assembly (NA) and people of Viet Nam hope to strengthen the nation's strategic partnership with Indonesia to promote peace and prosperity in the region and the world, NA Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung said yesterday.

Meeting with the Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Setya Novanto, who is attending the IPU-132 in Ha Noi, Hung hoped Viet Nam and Indonesia would work more closely in fisheries and preserving maritime security, while strengthening co-ordination at regional and international forums.

He lauded the Indonesian delegation's participation in the ongoing IPU-132, saying it will contribute to the success of the event while strengthening mutual understanding between the two nations and peoples.

Setya Novanto congratulated Viet Nam on successfully organising the IPU-132 and hoped a Ha Noi Declaration will be issued at the end of the event, carrying a Vietnamese imprint on the international stage.

He agreed with Hung that bilateral co-operation, especially on maritime issues, should be strengthened, as also the traditional friendship the two nations have enjoyed.

Setya Novanto also met yesterday with Vietnamese President Truong Tan Sang, who urged both nations to effectively implement bilateral agreements, especially economic pacts, to bolster their strategic partnership.

Highly valuing Indonesia's status in the region and the world, President Sang said he hoped the country would continue working for the common interests of the ASEAN community, including regional peace, stability and development.

Viet Nam is willing to join Indonesia in promoting negotiations for sea demarcation, he said, adding that the legislatures and people of both countries should reinforce their co-operation in forming the ASEAN Community. — VNS
