Chọn Gallery will open the new exhibition Urban Chronicles by Tô Kim Nhung, including 13 paintings on (poonah) paper, at 7pm tomorrow. The paintings reveal her unique perceptions of modern daily life in Hà Nội.

Nhung, a rising figure in Vietnamese contemporary art, has drawn attention from both the public and critics. Born in 1983 in the northern mountainous province of Yên Bái, she has witnessed the country’s development, which she presents through nouveau riche, shiny modern vehicles and high-rise buildings. However, behind all those glossy appearances, the traditional cultural values still remain strong. Through Nhung’s strokes, the most outstanding personality trait of Vietnamese people – hardworking — has been depicted. Her painting style and colours also reflect her life philosophy, which was influenced significantly by Buddhism.

Through her works, Nhung also empowers women to have a voice, despite the fact that Vietnamese society often sees women as holding ‘supporting roles’ beneath men, whether in the workplace or in relationships.

The exhibition will run until August 19. Chọn Gallery is located at 16 Tràng Tiền Street. — VNS
