ĐỒNG NAI —  The provincial authority of Đồng Nai, which has the largest number of pigs in the country, has proposed measures in response to the threat from African swine fever.

During a meeting at the Đồng Nai Department of Agriculture and Rural Development on February 20, the authorities said that information about the damaging effects of the African swine fever would be provided in the media, and that the people’s committees of all districts, Long Khánh Town and Biên Hoà City would coordinate with agencies to conduct inspections of pigs.

Quarantine stations on the National Highway No 1A will be improved, and new quarantine stations will be built on National Highway No 20 to supervise transportation of pigs in the province.

Quarantine operations at slaughterhouses will look out for unusual cases and have proper treatment. Specimens of pigs that have shown signs of African swine fever will be sent to agencies for assessment.

The Đồng Nai Department of Finance will announce the level of financial support and expenses for the culling of pigs with disease.

The Department of Natural Resources and Environment will identify the place for pig culling and issue culling regulations to ensure hygiene and environmental protection, and supply guidance on biological safety and disease prevention to farms in the province.

Trần Văn Quang, head of the province’s Division of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, said that Đồng Nai has the largest number of pigs in the country, with a total of more than 2.5 million. — VNS
