HOI AN (VNS) — A ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of the Cam Kim Bridge across the Hoai River was held today.

The VND32.5-billion (US$1.5 million) project, which will help connect the ancient town and Cam Kim crafts village and boost eco-tourism destinations, is scheduled to be completed next January.

Chairman of the city's people's committee Nguyen Van Dung told Viet Nam News that the 320m bridge and 300m roads on either side of the river will help the local people in Cam Kim, Kim Bong carpentry village and Duy Xuyen district to travel, and help them to avoid using the risky ferry service.

Dung said the bridge has long been the aspiration of thousands of people living on either side of the  Hoai River, and would help in quick and safe travel of tourists between Hoi An and rural crafts destinations.

Currently, hundreds of boats, which are modified fishing vessels, carry local residents, tourists and cargo between Hoi An and Duy Xuyen District. However, travel on these vessels is risky during the rainy and flood season between October and April.
