HA NOI(VNS) — Vietjet aircraft suffered several bird strikes last month, propelling authorities to send the aircraft for technical check-ups and repair, a Vietjet Air representative said.

These incidents delayed many flights, causing trouble for the carrier and passengers.

Vietjet Air has proposed to the Civil Aviation Authority of Viet Nam to initiate proper measures to keep birds away, especially during the migratory season.

Cao Van Thai, deputy head of the security committee of the Airports Co-operation of Viet Nam, said birds posed a potential risk to aircraft. Any collision with birds can damage an aircraft's body. Birds can enter the engines and destroy equipment if the aircraft is flying at high speed.

Airports have taken measures to keep birds away such as by using guns to shoot them or by trapping them, he said.

In addition, it's necessary to clean airports so that birds have no place to live there. However, this measure can only cope with small birds that fly at low altitudes. It is difficult to drive away birds flying at high altitudes.

A representative of the aviation authority said airports have done a good job but most of the bird strikes occurred while aircrafts were taking off and landing. Thus, carriers should co-ordinate with localities to eliminate possible areas where birds can live such as ponds and trees in the surrounding areas.

About 30 bird strikes were reported at airports in Viet Nam, causing aircraft to cease operations to fix the problems. Most of the accidents happened in Buon Ma Thuot, Vinh, Da Lat, Pleiku and Da Nang.

In the latest incident, a Vietjet Air's Airbus 320 had to be grounded in Noi Bai International Airport on Wednesday night to fix its nose cone after a bird strike during a flight from Buon Ma Thuot to Ha Noi.

A spokesperson for the budget carrier said it had to delay the next flight from Ha Noi to HCM City for half an hour to replace the damaged one. Many later flights were also affected. — VNS
