Shoemaker gets prison for fire code violations

HAI PHONG — The Hai Phong City People's Court yesterday sentenced Bui Thi Hien, 25, owner of a shoe workshop, to 11 years in prison for violating fire code regulations. Nhiep Thiep Phong, a Chinese man who co-owned the workshop, got a sentence of 12 years in prison.

Hien was the owner of a shoe workshop in Tan Dan Commune in the city's An Lao District which had neither a business license nor a fire escape.

A fire in the workshop on July 29, 2011 killed 13 workers and injured 25 others.

The court ordered the defendants to pay VND4.5 billion (US$216,000) in compensation to the injured parties and VND1.3 billion ($62,500) to the families of the deceased. — VNS
