Daring daylight gold theft attempt leaves three injured

(09-03-2009)

HCM CITY — Three were shot and injured during a foiled armed gold robbery attempt in HCM City’s District 7 on Saturday afternoon.

The injured included the suspect in the alleged robbery attempt, who was dressed in a police captain’s uniform, as well as two employees of the Tan Kim Hieu Jewellers Ship. All three were hospitalised after the incident.

The "police captain", who was seriously injured, was identified by police as Le Thanh Ha, 49, of central Thanh Hoa Province.

The robbery attempt took place at a house at No 49, Road No 53 in Binh Thuan Ward.

Luong Thi Xuan Dao, owner of the house, said on Friday evening, a "police captain" asked to rent her house for VND6 million per month.

She and Ha entered into a rental agreement, and she gave Ha the key to the house upon receiving a deposit of VND3.5 million plus US$10.

On Saturday morning, Ha allegedly placed a call to the Tan Kim Hieu shop in District 7’s Tan Phu Ward, asking to purchase 300-400 taels of gold.

He requested that the gold be delivered at the Binh Thuan Ward house, instead of at the jeweler’s shop, for "security reasons".

Six employees from the Tan Kim Hieu shop arrived at the house with the gold at around 4pm, and four of the employees entered the house, at which time Ha opened fire on them with an AK-47 automatic weapon.

Police responded quickly to the scene upon reports of gunfire from neighbours of the house, and Ha was injured in a subsequent shootout with police.

Upon subduing Ha, the police officers seized the AK-47, a K59 pistol and 10 cartridges, a grenade, and nearly 400 taels of gold.

The case is under investigation. — VNS
