Government officials prosecuted for gambling

(24-01-2006)

HA NOI — The Supreme People’s Procuracy prosecuted three Government officials yesterday for illegal football gambling.

Bui Tien Dung, general director of the Ministry of Transport’s Project Management Unit (PMU) 18; Nguyen Viet Bac, of the ministry’s deputy general director of the Highway Development Company; and Vu Manh Tien, deputy chief of the ministry’s PMU 18’s Office were all linked to gambling rings.

Yesterday, police also arrested and searched Tien’s home and office for further evidence in the case.

Bac officially confessed that he was involved in the ring and had delivered gambling money to the police. However, police said the amount was much smaller compared to figures in Bui Quang Hung’s files and will keep Bac for further questioning.

Last week, police arrested Dung for his involvment in the nation’s biggest gambling ring which was believed to be led by Hung, a Ha Noi policeman.

Police said Dung had bet the most money in the ring and that he had spent nearly US$2.4 million in illegal bets on many European football matches.

Dung and Tien will be in police detention for at least three months, said a police spokesman. — VNS
