HÀ NỘI — Deputy Defence Minister Sen Lieut Gen Nguyễn Chí Vịnh hosted a reception in Hà Nội on Wednesday for outgoing director of the Korea International Co-operation Agency (KOICA) Kim Jin-oh.
At the meeting, the two sides reviewed co-operation between Việt Nam and the Republic of Korea (RoK) in addressing post-war consequences in Việt Nam, including a US$20 million project funded by the RoK Government to clean up areas contaminated with mines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) in the central provinces of Quảng Bình and Bình Định, and another for detoxifying dioxin-polluted areas around Đà Nẵng Airport.
Vịnh appreciated Kim’s contributions to and the role of KOICA in promoting the Việt Nam – RoK co-operation over the past three years.
The two sides agreed to enhance co-operation, focusing on expanding the project to Quảng Nam and Quảng Trị, and implementing a technical assistance project to detoxify dioxin-contaminated areas at A Sho airport in the central province of Thừa Thiên-Huế.
The RoK side promised to assist Việt Nam in personnel training and build databases to effectively address the consequences of wartime toxic chemicals and UXOs. — VNS
