WASHINGTON DC (VNS) — National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung met separately with US Senators Patrick Leahy and John McCain on Wednesday, to stress the importance of Viet Nam's friendship with the US.

Chairman Hung shared his appreciation of the last 20 years of normalised diplomatic ties and the outcomes of their co-operation. He also praised the two Senators' specific contributions to promoting the comprehensive partnership in recent years.

Looking to the future, he said Viet Nam hopes to improve its legal reforms through enhanced cooperation with the US who has its experience in the field. He suggested the two countries' legislatures establish an annual dialogue mechanism and organise programmes to share experience in legislative activities and issues of shared concern.

Senator Leahy spoke highly of Viet Nam's socio-economic development achievements, saying that he believes the country has a bright future.

He stated that the US Congress is keen to step up comprehensive co-operation with Viet Nam.

In another meeting with Senator John McCain, McCain expressed his hope that Viet Nam, the US and other countries in Trans-pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations would reach a consensus soon.

He voiced concerns about the recent situation in the East Sea, saying that all disputes should be settled by peaceful measures and with respect for international law.

Chairman Hung then left Washington DC for Ha Noi, wrapping up an eight-day official visit to the US. — VNS
