HA NOI (VNS) — Newly appointed Qatari ambassador Abdullah Sultan Al-Hamar told Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung yesterday that he is tasked with further developing bilateral ties with Viet Nam, a significant country in Qatar's diplomatic policy.
He revealed that Viet Nam is set to receive an investment inflow from Qatar. The Qatar National Bank — the largest in the Middle East — will open a branch in HCM City on March 30 and another in Ha Noi in the near future, he said, adding that Qatari businesses are not satisfied with their US$1 billion-plus investments in Viet Nam and are seeking more large-scale projects.
He also said that Qatar supports Viet Nam's economic reform efforts and its bid for seats in United Nations bodies.
Qatar will recognise Viet Nam as a market economy soon, the ambassador said.
PM Dung said Viet Nam is willing to invite Qatar investors to buy stakes in equitised firms, become strategic stakeholders in major commercial banks, and bid to operate airports, seaports and highways in the country.
He also asked Qatar to offer additional official development assistance to impoverished areas in Viet Nam and strengthen collaboration in the labour, finance and banking sectors. — VNS
