HA NOI (VNS) — Viet Nam is committed to the purposes and principles of the United Nations charter and firmly believes that peace and diplomacy, law and reason should prevail, Nguyen Phuong Nga, the nation's Permanent Representative at the UN, has said.

She was speaking at an open debate of the UN Security Council held on Monday.

Titled, "Maintenance of international peace and security: Reflect on history, reaffirm strong commitment to the purposes and principles of the Charter of the UN" the debate was organised at China's initiative.

In her statement, Nga said that the UN, guided by the purposes and principles of its Charter, has grown to be truly universal and indispensable in co-ordinating international efforts to address global challenges.

She said the UN and its members have relentlessly tried to reign in wars and other violent conflicts, strengthened international co-operation for development as well as promotion and protection of human rights, promoted progressive development of international law, and strengthened democracy and justice in inter-state relations.

The challenges the world faces today are ever more daunting, Nga said, citing wars in many regions, the risk of armed conflicts and the threat or use of force and the designs of power politics.

"This compels us to take up our collective duty to reinforce and materialise strong commitment to the principles and purposes of the Charter, including the principles of sovereign equality, national sovereignty, territorial integrity, non-interference and peaceful settlement of disputes," she said.

Nga also called for redoubled efforts to eliminate poverty, hunger and inequality, saying they are among the root causes of insecurity and instability.

"We must all contribute to the maintenance of international peace and security through concrete, practical actions, including the development and promotion of principles, norms and codes of conduct in accordance with the principles set out in the Charter," she said.

She also that the Security Council, in particular its permanent members, have a special role to play in this regard.

Nga emphasised that Viet Nam was strongly committed to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and international law, and always contributed actively and constructively to common endeavours for regional and international peace, stability and security.

She affirmed that Viet Nam was working with other ASEAN members and partners to develop and adhere to mutually agreed principles and codes of conduct, and settle all disputes, including the East Sea issue, by peaceful means, in accordance with the UN Charter and international law.

"We are doing our best to build an ASEAN Community and a Southeast Asian region of peace and prosperity," she said. — VNS
