HA NOI (VNS) — The last working session of the National Assembly Standing Committee, which concluded yesterday, focused discussions on the upcoming 132nd Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU132).
National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung asked the committee to proactively co-operate with the IPU General Assembly and the IPU Secretariat in preparing the agenda for IPU132's working sessions, in particular for the IPU's joint-declaration on peace, collaboration and growth.
He said IPU132 was an opportunity to show the international community that Vietnamese are a peaceful and friendly people, and that Viet Nam is willing to contribute to global peace and development.
The event, titled, "Sustainable Development Goals: Turning words into action," will take place from March 28 to April 1 in Ha Noi.
Viet Nam's government, as member to the IPU, has voiced its commitment to carrying out actions that will help realise the post-2015 UN Sustainable Development Goals, which will be made official this year.
Tran Van Hang, Chairman of the External Relations Committee, said Viet Nam had almost completed its preparations for hosting the IPU132.
Other activities will take place during the IPU132, including a meeting of women parliamentarians and a forum of young parliamentarians from the IPU.
Delegates will participate in the IPU General Assembly discussions as well as discuss actions that can be taken to encourage women and youth to participate in political movements.
Member states of the IPU will jointly-issue a declaration by the end of the IPU132, and will present it to the UN in September. — VNS
