Vietnamese, Chinese leaders celebrate start of ties

HA NOI (VNS) —  Vietnamese and Chinese leaders have exchanged congratulatory messages to mark the 65th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, President Truong Tan Sang, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, and National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung have exchanged greetings with Chinese Party General Secretary and President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Keqiang, and Chairman of the National People's Congress Zhang De Jiang.

In their letters, the Vietnamese leaders affirm that January 18, 1950 marked an important milestone in the history of bilateral relations, with China becoming the first nation in the world to establish diplomatic ties with Viet Nam.

The letters stress that friendship and co-operation remained the dominant theme of relations between the two Parties and States over the past 65 years, despite difficulties.

They also say that continuous consolidation and development of bilateral ties will meet the basic and long-term interests of both peoples and contribute to maintaining peace, stability, co-operation and development in the region and the world.

The leaders express pleasure in new progress made in the Viet Nam-China comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.

Viet Nam always treasures its relationship with China and wants to work with its neighbour on further strengthening bilateral relations, they say .

With joint efforts from both sides, the time-honoured friendship, mutual trust and mutually-beneficial collaboration between the two Parties, States and peoples will be enhanced, bringing prosperity and happiness for both, they say.

In their greetings, the Chinese leaders also stress the importance that the Party and Government attach to developing bilateral ties with Viet Nam.

China stands ready to work with Viet Nam to carry forward their strategic co-operation with a strategic and long-term perspective, mindful of the need to steer bilateral relations in the correct direction, they say.

In the context of profound changes in international and regional arenas, good-neighborliness and friendship, enhanced political mutual trust and deepened co-operation will match the aspirations and fundamental interests of both peoples, they add.

On the occasion, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh has also exchanged congratulatory messages his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi. —VNS
