HA NOI (VNS) — Culture is a measure of national progress on par with politics, the economy and the environment, Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong said on Saturday to senior officials of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in Ha Noi.
Hoang Tuan Anh, the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, briefed Trong on achievements made by the department over the last four years.
Viet Nam is home to 5,000 artists; 446 culture, sports and tourism training centres; and 1,000 vocational schools serving a total of 80,000 students.
The country also boasts 20 world heritage sites, 48 special national relic sites, 3,211 national relic sites, 67 national treasures, 69 national intangible cultural heritages and 145 museums holding close to 3 million objects.
The tourism sector generated 2 million jobs from January to September and made VND179 trillion (US$8.5 billion), up 19 per cent from last year.
Over 38 million arrivals were recorded during the period, with 6 million – 10 per cent more than last year – coming from abroad.
To continue the momentum of previous years' successes, Anh called for culture officers around the country to be given better training, as well as all possible resources for the cause.
Participants suggested improving relevant regulations and laws, while strengthening State management of cultural affairs. — VNS
