GENEVA (VNS) — National Assembly Vice Chairwoman Tong Thi Phong hoped the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) would enhance its role in promoting gender equality as one of its post-2015 sustainable development goals.

Gender equality was not only a target in its own right, but also a precondition for the advancement of women and socio-economic development in any country, the NA Vice Chairwoman said at the ongoing 131st IPU Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland.

She also said that the Vietnamese NA had undertaken efforts to improve legislative and policy frameworks to implement human rights and gender equality and eliminate violence against women.

As a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council in the 2014-2016 tenure, Viet Nam was actively implementing its international commitments to promote and protect human rights, including women's rights and the rights of children and girls, and to eliminate all forms of discrimination and violence against them, Phong said. — VNS
