HA NOI (VNS) — Viet Nam and the United States should mark the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations by further strengthening ties in several key areas, officials of both countries say.

Economic, trade and education ties as well as people-to-people exchanges should be a major focus of this effort, they agreed during a four-day US visit by a Vietnamese delegation that ended yesterday.

The agreement was expressed in talks held between Counsellor of the US Department of State Thomas Shannon and the visiting Vietnamese delegation which included Secretary of the Ha Noi Party Committee Pham Quang Nghi, Deputy Foreign Minister Ha Kim Ngoc, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Nguyen Thai Lai and deputy head of the Party Central Committee's Commission for External Relations Vuong Thua Phong.

Both sides also expressed satisfaction with the progress of the Viet Nam - US ties, especially since the establishment of comprehensive partnership in July 2013.

They discussed the central role played by the ASEAN bloc in the region, the US's development cooperation with the Asia-Pacific region and the Lower Mekong Initiative (LMI).

Both sides pledged greater co-operation on LMI issues. — VNS
