HA NOI (VNS) — Viet Nam and Singapore could offer more support to each other and grow further, former Prime Minister and Emeritus Senior Minister of Singapore, Goh Chok Tong said yesterday.
Goh referred especially to Viet Nam's advantages in agriculture and human resources.
At a meeting with President Truong Tan Sang in Ha Noi, Goh said he was delighted at the progress made in bilateral relations.
He suggested the two countries co-operate in aviation and tourism since Singapore attracted 16 million visitors a year.
Goh added that Singapore was willing to share its experience and support Viet Nam in developing its banking system, accessing loans to upgrade infrastructure and help improve the quality of human resources.
President Sang said he valued the former PM's proposal and said he hoped both sides would deepen the bilateral strategic partnership further.
Ha Noi keen to learn
Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee Pham Quang Nghii expressed hope to learn from Singapore's experiences in urban planning and management, real estate development, urban underground space usage and social housing provision during a meeting with former Prime Minister and Emeritus Senior Minister of Singapore Goh Chok Tong yesterday.
The Ha Noi leader proposed that the Singaporean government encourage businesses to strengthen their investments in Viet Nam, particularly in agriculture, technology, infrastructure, finance and maritime transport.
Nghi spoke highly of the two countries' co-operation and said that Singapore's support in terms of direct investment and technical assistance, especially via the Viet Nam-Singapore Industrial Parks, had helped boost the country's socio-economic development.
Highlighting the efficiency of education co-operation, he suggested that Singapore continue to award scholarships to Vietnamese students, help Viet Nam develop the professional and English skills of management officials and provide vocational training.
Viet Nam, and Ha Noi in particular, would create favourable conditions for Singaporean citizens and businesses, Nghi said.
Goh Chok Tong agreed with his host's proposal to encourage businesses to invest in Viet Nam, saying that it would benefit both sides and help Viet Nam improve its technical, managerial and financial capacities.
The former Singaporean PM also suggested that Viet Nam improve its investment environment by reforming and completing its legal system, which would attract more investment. — VNS
