Party General Secretary welcomes visiting Cuban Foreign Minister

HA NOI (VNS) — Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung received Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla yesterday.

Parrilla is visiting Viet Nam to follow up on agreements signed during PM Dung's vist to Cuba in March.

General Secretary Trong thanked Cuba for its valuable support for Viet Nam, restating his country's long-lasting solidarity with Cuba.

He proposed the two countries increase their co-operation in all fields, ranging from politics and economics to culture, science, technology and healthcare.

The Party leader said he hoped the two sides would set out concrete and practical measures to educate younger generations on the solidarity and special traditional friendship between the two countries.

He said he believed the people of Cuba would succeed in transforming the country's economic structure towards socialism under the leadership of the Cuban Communist Party.

PM Dung said Viet Nam valued its relationship with Cuba and pledged to take maximum efforts to boost and deepen bilateral ties in all fields of mutual interest.

He said he hoped both sides would strengthen co-ordination to implement the ratified medium-term co-operation programme, with a focus on stepping up trade and investment, as well as enhancing co-operation on culture, education, science-technology, and defence/security, and providing mutual support at multilateral forums and in international organisations.

The PM also suggested the two sides focus on ways to implement the agreements signed between high-ranking leaders during the coming inter-governmental committee meeting in Havana.

The Cuban guest said he was grateful for Vietnamese assistance to Cuba during its nation-building and national development.

He said Cuba valued Viet Nam, adding that it would continue to educate the next generation on the long-lasting special friendship and solidarity between the two countries.

Bilateral talks

Also yesterday, the Cuban guest met Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh. They pledged to intensify their efforts to deepen the co-operation on bilateral and multilateral issues.

The two also discussed measures to foster solidarity and collaboration between the two countries and ministries - and exchanged views on regional and global issues.

The Cuban guest praised Viet Nam's achievements during its renewal process. He also highly valued the co-operation between the two countries in multilateral forums, international organisations, the Non-Aligned Movement, and East Asia-Latin America Co-operation Forum.

Parrilla also said Cuba valued Viet Nam's consistent support for Cuba in the past.

Minh said Viet Nam thought highly of the relationship and co-operation with Cuba.

Both sides said these developments had been further enhanced by the visit of Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung's to Cuba in March.

The two ministers also agreed to implement high-level agreements signed by the two governments. They said the two countries should expand ties in commerce, agriculture, oil, gas, biotechnology, and construction.

The two sides agreed to organise the 55th anniversary of diplomatic ties next year.

Later yesterday, the Cuban Foreign Minister met Vice Chairwoman of the National Assembly, Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, and head of the CPV's Central Committee's Commission for External Relations, Hoang Binh Quan. — VNS
