HA NOI (VNS)— Lawyers need to improve their competence so that they can take part in settling international disputes as the country continues along the path of global integration, President Truong Tan Sang said at a working session with the Viet Nam Bar Federation (VBF) in Ha Noi yesterday.

During the session, Sang urged the federation to make greater efforts to step up judicial reform. He also encouraged members to work with relevant agencies and local authorities to raise public awareness about the importance of abiding by the law.

Participants proposed improving the organisational structure of judicial bodies, treating lawyers and procurators equally and increasing lawyers' legal status.

As of June, the country had 8,675 licensed lawyers.

Members of the federation have defended over 54,000 criminal cases, 5,500 economic cases and 4,400 administrative cases in the past five years. The VBF has also provided free legal assistance for more than 31,200 low-income people and social welfare beneficiaries. — VNS
