QUANG TRI (VNS) — Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh and his Lao counterpart, Thoonglun Sisulith, have hailed the success of border demarcation and the setting up of border markers between the two countries.

The two sides met in Viet Nam's central province of Quang Tri on Tuesday to mark the opening of the La Lay international border gate that divides Quang Tri from Salavan Province in Laos.

Discussing regional and international issues of common concern, the deputy prime ministers expressed concern about the increasingly complicated developments in the East Sea.

They applauded ASEAN foreign ministers for issuing a statement on the situation in May.

The two called for stronger unity among ASEAN nations, saying that the bloc needed a common voice on security and development based on respect for international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea.

They said this included working concluding an understanding on a Code of Conduct in the East Sea. — VNS
