HA NOI (VNS)— Deputy PM Hoang Trung Hai has praised the chemical sector for its strong performance and important role in national socio-economic development, with an annual contribution of 8-10 per cent to the country's total industrial production value.
Speaking at a conference to review the operation of the Viet Nam National Chemicals Group (Vinachem) on Saturday, Hai said the Party and State considered the sector a key industry and paid attention to its development and efficiency.
However, he also pointed out that despite its best efforts, the sector was yet to meet all of the country's requirements. More effective operations with a stronger organisational framework were needed to meet the demands of other industries and civilians. Technological renovations were crucial, he said.
Hai praised the group's fertiliser production that has met 70 per cent of domestic demand and exported a number of products such as urea.
According to Vinachem Director General Nguyen Dinh Khang, the group was targeting VND48 trillion (US$2.3 billion) in production value this year, up 12.5 per cent over 2013.
In 2013, Vinachem's import-export value reached $559 million, down 11.1 per cent against 2012.
The group also employs 27,000 workers who earn an average of VND7.5 million ($357) every month.
