Search for soldiers discussed with US

Update: May, 21/2013 - 09:41

HA NOI (VNS)— Senior Lieutenant General and Deputy Minister of National Defence Nguyen Chi Vinh yesterday met with W M Winfield, US deputy assistant Secretary of Defence for Prisoner of War and Missing Personnel, to discuss the search for the remains of soldiers killed during the American War.

Vinh said Viet Nam always took the co-operation in the search for US servicemen who went missing during the war as a goodwill and humanitarian act of the Vietnamese Government and people to help ease the pain of American families.

He suggested the US continue taking the initiative in promoting the search for the remains of missing Vietnamese and Americans soldiers.

He said this laid the way for co-operation with Viet Nam in solving problems relating to the consequences of the war, such as the disposal of unexploded ordnance, detoxication of Agent Orange/Dioxin and humanitarian support.

Winfield said that in the past 25 years, the US had received valuable support from the Vietnamese Government, people and veterans in the search and return of the remains of American soldiers. — VNS
