HA NOI — The co-operation agreement recently signed between the Vietnamese and Cambodian National Assemblies would contribute to further increasing bilateral co-operation and friendship between the two countries.

President Truong Tan Sang made this remark at his reception for Heng Samrin, President of the Cambodian National Assembly (NA) in Ha Noi yesterday.

Sang noted with pleasure the development of the fine relations between both nations recently, with regular exchanges of high-ranking delegations and ties expanding in national defence, culture, economics and investment.

He described Heng Samrin's visit as a vivid manifestation in promoting traditional friendship between the two countries.

Heng Samrin expressed his delight at visiting Viet Nam at a time when the two countries were preparing activities to mark the 45th anniversary of their diplomatic ties.

He also thanked the Vietnamese people for saving the Cambodian people from a genocidal regime in the past as well as for their assistance in the latter's current national liberation, construction and defence.

The top Cambodian legislator said he believed the Cambodian – Vietnamese traditional friendship would develop for the benefit of the two nations and for peace and friendship in the region and the world.

Welcoming the top Cambodian legislator in Ha Noi yesterday, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung underscored Viet Nam's support for Cambodia as ASEAN Chair in 2012 and its candidacy for the non-permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council for the 2013-14 tenure.

Dung said he hoped the two sides would effectively implement co-operation agreements signed by the two countries' leaders, especially promoting educational, healthcare and cultural co-operation between the two countries' bordering provinces.

He proposed both sides closely co-ordinate to effectively organise activities to mark the Viet Nam-Cambodia Friendship Year 2012, completing land border demarcation and marker planting to build a border of peace, co-operation, friendship and development.

The PM also asked the Cambodian NA to continue helping the Vietnamese community living and working in Cambodia, thus contributing to lifting the traditional friendship between the two countries.

Cambodian NA leader Heng Samrin said his visit aimed to further bolster the two countries' traditional friendship.

He took the occasion to thank Viet Nam's backing to Cambodia's candidacy for the non-permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council for the 2013-14 tenure.

Also yesterday, Cambodian NA President Heng Samrin was received by President of the Viet Nam Fatherland Front (VFF) Central Committee Huynh Dam, who affirmed that the VFF always paid attention to Cambodia's development and achievements.

Heng Samrin, who is also President of the National Council of the United Front for the Development of the Cambodian Motherland, affirmed that the organisation would join the Cambodian Party, State, National Assembly and people to do their best for the solidarity of the two peoples and for the development of the Viet Nam-Cambodia traditional friendship.

PM Dung affirmed that Viet Nam was always a reliable and faithful neighbour of Cambodia while receiving Cambodia's Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Men Sam An yesterday.

Dung stressed that Viet Nam would join Cambodian efforts to develop bilateral ties, ranging from politics and diplomacy to economics, security, defence and culture.

The Government leader described the visit as a practical contribution to fostering the friendship between the two nations.

Men Sam An expressed her wish that Cambodia would continue to receive support and learn experience from Viet Nam in fighting corruption, handling people's petitions and dealing with complaints and denunciations.

She suggested the two sides continue strengthening and popularising their friendship and co-operation and prevent any negative opinions sowing divisions between the two nations. — VNS
