Southeast Asian cultural officials meet in Da Nang

DA NANG — Senior officials gathered at the 13th meeting of the ASEAN-Committee of Culture and Information (COCI) in the central city yesterday.

The annual event aims at exchanging information to promote understanding on culture, history, religion and economics.

"Information and communication has played an important role in building friendship between ASEAN countries. It has also helped regional culture across the worldwide," said Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Do Quy Doan.

"Viet Nam has significantly contributed to the development of ASEAN since it joined the association in 1995.

The country has helped boost cultural and information exchange in the process of international integration as well as promoted co-operation, understanding and solidarity among member countries," he told the opening ceremony.

The meeting saw the first time participation of dialogue partners from China, Japan and South Korea.

Vice Chairman of the Da Nang People's Committee Phung Tan Viet said: "It's a great honour for us to host the meeting. Situated in the East-West Economic Corridor linking Viet Nam, Myanmar, Thailand and Laos, the city will help develop economies and connect people in the ASEAN community."

Participant will discuss action plans for 2012-13 and the process of developing digital television technology in ASEAN countries by 2020.

Talks will also focus on China, Japan and South Korea strengthening their relationship with ASEAN and its partners through information and communication.
