HCM CITY — The Viet Nam National Mekong Committee has made great contributions to the Mekong River Commission (MRC)'s achievements through its active role as chair of the MRC for the 2011-12 period.
Speaking at yesterday's review meeting of the committee, the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment and chairman of VNMC, Nguyen Minh Quang, said: "The VNMC has issued many initiatives to solve major issues in Mekong co-operation."
A series of reports by international consultants on how hydropower dams have affected the Mekong River have been submitted to the Prime Minister.
The committee was praised for its supervision of the impact upstream to the Mekong Delta, as well as inter-water resources.
Bilateral and multi lateral co-operation with countries in which the Mekong River flows have been strengthened, along with relationships with sponsors, NGOs, and organisations involved with hydropower and climate change.
However, the committee called for increasing involvement of ministries and industries in all activities related to Mekong co-operation.
"Expansion and fostering of information, data sharing and Mekong cooperation with ministries, industries and localities is a must," Quang added.
He said it was important to promote information-sharing about the threats and challenges for the river in the future.
In 2013, the committee plans to strengthen relations with upstream nations. — VNS
