HAVANA — Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and his entourage had a very busy time in the capital city of Cuba yesterday.

National Assembly President Ricardo Alarcon de Quesada said the visit by the Vietnamese Party General Secretary was a milestone in the bilateral relationship between the two nations.
Speaking at a reception for Trong, Ricardo expressed the Cuban Party, Government and people's sincere thanks for support and assistance from Viet Nam.
"Cuba admires the achievements and experiences gained by Viet Nam on its course of renewal as precious lessons," Ricardo said.
In turn, Trong praised Cuba's achievements during the past few years, particularly in the fields of socio-economics, national defence and health care.
Both Recardo and Trong reiterated their resolve to deepen the special solidarity and friendship as well as multifaceted co-operation between the two parties, governments, parliaments and peoples.
They further promised to tighten bilateral and multi-lateral co-operation in the international arena and at international forums.
The same day, Trong received Jose Miguel Mejia, general secretary of the Dominican United Left Movement (MIU) cum Cabinet minister of the Dominican Republic.
Jose said he would do his best to promote the traditional solidarity and friendship between the two parties and people of Viet Nam and Dominica. He recalled the deep impression of his February visit to the country and spoke highly of its achievements.
They also discussed ways to elevate economic and trade co-operation and investment.
On this occasion, Trong presented Jose with US$300,000 – a gift from the Vietnamese people to the Dominican people for the building of a school in the Dominican capital city.
Later on the day, Trong and his entourage travelled to the western province of Pina del Rio to visit a project on Rice Production Co-operation between the two countries for the 2011-15 period.
After more than a year of implementation, more than 3,000 hectares have been put under rice and more than 170,000 tonnes of paddy harvested. On average, the rice yield was between 5-6 tonnes per hectare per crop.
Trong called on both sides to work closely in making the project a success for the benefit of Cuban farmers and for the development of friendship and co-operation between the countries.
In another development, Trong attended a meeting at the Hai Phong berth, based in the Havana port.
He reiterated Viet Nam's unswerving solidarity with and support for the just struggle of the Cuban people in demanding that the US immediately and unconditionally stop its trade embargo on the country.
On behalf of the Vietnamese people, Trong presented the Cuban people with 5,000 tonnes of rice.
He also received a delegation of the Cuba-Viet Nam Friendship Association led by its Vice President Marta Roja.
In the evening, Trong visited the Vietnamese Embassy in Havana and had a cordial talk with embassy staff and the Vietnamese living there.
In another development, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan had working sessions with leaders from the Cuban Ministry of Education and Health while Minister of Finance Vuong Dinh Hue held talks with Cuban Minister of Finance and Prices Lina Pedraza Rodriguez.
The two ministers signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on financial co-operation for the next four years (2012-15).
Meanwhile, Minister of Construction Trinh Dinh Dung and Cuban Minister of Construction Rene Mesa Villafana witnessed the signing of an MoU between the Vietnamese Group of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Cuban Tourism and Hotel Corporation (Cubanacan) to build a five-star hotel in Havana. — VNS
