ALGIERS — Viet Nam, in its foreign policy of multilateralisation and diversification, highly values the development of ties with Algeria and considers the country one of its priority partners in North Africa and the world.

State President Nguyen Minh Triet made the statement during his talks with Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika in the capital city of Algiers yesterday morning.

He spoke highly of the achievements that the Algerian people had made during the implementation of national construction and development.

He said that he was pleased with the recent positive developments in bilateral ties.

For his part, President Abdelaziz Bouteflika said that the Vietnamese State leader's visit was of great significance, helping bring the traditional friendship and co-operation between the two countries to a new level of development.

He praised Viet Nam's achievements over the past, especially its efforts to overcome the negative impacts of the global economic recession in order to uphold its dynamism and attractiveness in the Asia-Pacific region.

The Algerian President also affirmed that Algeria paid special attention to developing its relationship with Viet Nam, one of its traditional friends in Asia.

The two leaders discussed at length specific measures to strengthen and expand bilateral co-operation, particularly in oil and gas, trade, construction and labour. They also talked about regional and international issues of common concern.

Both host and guest agreed that in the context of the two countries' strong development, bilateral co-operation should be strengthened and consolidated in order to take advantage of each other's potentials and together develop for the benefit of the people and the prosperity of the two nations.

They agreed to increase exchanges of delegations at all levels and applauded the signing of co-operative agreements during the visit, which had helped create a favourable framework for boosting bilateral ties.

In parallel with the talks between the heads of the two States, leaders of Vietnamese ministries and agencies discussed with Algerian partners the orientations and specific measures to expand bilateral co-operation. They agreed to actively prepare for the 9th session of the Viet Nam-Algeria Inter-Governmental Committee this year.

After the talks, Triet and his Algerian counterpart witnessed the signing of important agreements, including agreements on judiciary assistance in trade and civil and criminal affairs, an agreement on criminal extradition and memoranda of understanding on bilateral co-operation in justice, sports, aquaculture and veterinary co-operation, as well as the protection and quarantine of agricultural products.

On the evening of Tuesday, Triet received representatives of the Algeria-Viet Nam Friendship Association (AVFA). He affirmed that Viet Nam would be a faithful friend to the Algerian people and said that he wished to continue strengthening the friendship and co-operation with the North African country.

AVFA President Abdelkrim Hassani described the Vietnamese President's visit as a clear manifestation of the close ties between the two nations. The visit had opened a new chapter for the relationship between Viet Nam and Algeria, he added. — VNS
