VIENTIANE — Lao Deputy Prime Minister Thongloun Sioulith received Deputy Director of the Commission for External Relations under the Communist Party of Viet Nam's Central Committee, Pham Xuan Son yesterday.
The four-day visit by the Vietnamese Party delegation, starting on Tuesday, was made on the occasion of the 55th founding anniversary of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party (LPRP).
Deputy Prime Minister Thongloun Sioulith, who is also Foreign Minister and Director of the LPRP Central Committee's Commission for External Relations, stressed that the visit contributed to strengthening the friendship, solidarity and comprehensive co-operation between the two States, Parties and peoples in general as well as the two commissions in particular.
Indonesian army chief welcomed
HA NOI – Defence Minister General Phung Quang Thanh yesterday met with the Indonesian Army's Chief of General Staff, Lt Gen Edy Harjoko, who is visiting Viet Nam for the 7th ASEAN Chiefs of Defence Forces Informal Meeting.
Thanh said he believed the visit would contribute to the success of the meeting as well as solidify traditional ties between the two countries.
He said he considered it an opportunity for the two sides to continue their exchanges and agreements as well as to implement bilateral co-operation on national defence between the two armies.
Harjoko said he hoped national defence co-operation between the two armies would continue to develop and prosper.
Top Malaysian general visits Viet Nam
HA NOI — The Chief of the Defence Forces of Malaysia, General Tan Sri Dato' Sri Azizan Ariffin, made an official visit to Viet Nam at the invitation of Chief of the General Staff of the Viet Nam People's Army, Sen Lt Gen Nguyen Khac Nghien.
After a welcoming ceremony in Ha Noi yesterday, the two army officers held talks, discussing issues related to enhancing solidarity and mutual understanding between the people and armed forces of both countries in the spirit of peace and friendly co-operation in Southeast Asia and the world at large.
On the same day, the Malaysian defence forces chief and his entourage paid a courtesy visit to Defence Minister General Phung Quang Thanh.
ASEAN Finance Ministers Meeting
HA NOI — The 14th ASEAN Finance Ministers' Meeting will be hosted by the Ministry of Finance and the State Bank of Viet Nam from April 5-8 in the coastal city of Nha Trang, central Khanh Hoa Province.
The event has been approved by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung as part of a series of high-level ASEAN meetings to be hosted by Viet Nam during its chairmanship of the regional bloc this year.
Viet Nam, Ukraine reach customs deal
HA NOI — Viet Nam and Ukraine signed an agreement on co-operation and mutual administrative assistance in customs matters.
The deal was reached during Deputy Finance Minister Do Hoang Anh Tuan's visit to Ukraine this week.
At the talks between the State Customs Service of Ukraine and a high-ranking delegation from the Vietnamese Ministry of Finance and the General Department of Customs, both sides noted that the signing of the agreement was an important advance, reflecting the co-operative spirit and commitment of the two governments and customs agencies.
The two sides also signed a memorandum of understanding on the exchange of customs statistics on two-way trade, which is part of the newly-signed agreement.
While in Ukraine, the delegation held working sessions with the Vietnamese embassy and the Kiev-based Viet Nam Business Association to seek solutions to remove hurdles in boosting trade between Viet Nam and Ukraine.—VNS
