A plan to develop Western style angle-parking for cars in Tran Hung Dao and Ly Thuong Kiet is presently being tested out with approval from Ha Noi People's Committee.
The move is seen as an attempt to rein in traffic congestion in downtown Ha Noi, especially since big cars began to dominate most of the roads. Ha Noi Parking Ltd Co has been licensed as sole provider of the pilot parking service.
However, instead of providing more road space, the new way of parking takes up to a third of a road at least 12 hours a day. Road users, particularly motorbike drivers, are concerned that the move will intensify rush-hour traffic snarls instead of overcoming them.
What do you think about the new plan? Do you think it will work? Should the scheme be expanded to more streets? Should car drivers be forced to pay for multi-level parking lots so that other people can use the roads?
