1117 Death of Y Lan, born Le Thi Khiet (born 1044), concubine of Vietnamese 11th century King Ly Thanh Tong and mother of King Ly Nhan Tong. She effectively assisted the two kings in policy making.
1516 Turkish Ottoman army vanquishes Arab Mameluke forces north of Aleppo, sealing conquest of Syria.
1572 The slaughter of French Protestants at the hands of Catholics begins in Paris.
1759 Birth of William Wilberforce. English statesman, philanthropist and reformer, he was instrumental in the abolition of the slave trade in the British West Indies in 1807.
1802 Birth of French novelist and dramatist Alexandre Dumas, also called "Dumas pere" (died 1870). Among his most famous works are The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo.
1929 Birth of Yasser Arafat, co-founder and chairman of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO), president of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) and a co-winner of the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize. He died in November 11, 2004.
1971 About 40,000 students and people take part in a major demonstration in the city of Da Nang against US intervention in Viet Nam.
