HA NOI - Stargazers are in for a treat this week with a meteor shower expected to be seen early Sunday morning throughout Viet Nam, said Dang Vu Tuan Son, chairman of the Viet Nam Amateur Club of Astronomy.

The annual meteor shower named Lyrids is usually best seen at about 2am, looking towards the northeast. The meteor shower can be seen without the aid of a telescope, said Son, with a maximum of 20 meteors expected to be seen during the course of an hour. The showers will be visible if it is not too foggy or cloudy and it will be hard to see the meteor shower in the capital due to thick clouds and smog.

Son said the Lyrids meteor shower lasted from 10 to 15 days and occurred when the Earth passed through a comet's orbit or the debris left behind a comet.

It was named Lyrids because it appears to radiate from the constellation Lyra. -VNS
