Deputy PM calls for report into recent motorbike fires

HA NOI — Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai has ordered the publication of investigation results related to the recent spate of vehicle fires alongside the provision of preventive measures.

A report on investigations and further inspections on petrol quality was sent to the Deputy PM yesterday.

Sixty-five cases were reported to have occurred in the first three months of this year, injuring three people.

According to Ministry of Public Security statistics, of 324 vehicles to have caught fire during the last two years, more than 60 per cent were found to have been caused by electric short-circuits, collisions or arson.

While the public was prone to believe petrol quality to be behind the fires, the Ministry of Science and Technology's Goods Quality Management Department research revealed that investigated petrol and diesel had met such standards.

In January, the Prime Minister ordered the ministries of Science and Technology, Transport, Industry and Trade, and Public Security to enhance measures to prevent vehicle fires with focus on the inspection of petrol quality, vehicle manufacture, registeration, maintenance and repair. — VNS
