HA NOI - A 21-story apartment building in Ha Noi's Nguyen Chi Thanh street, was ingulfed in flames early this morning. Despite many people being stuck in their rooms during the fire, no injuries have been reported.
"The building caught fire at about 4 a.m. None of us could douse the flames because it spread so quickly", said Nguyen Dinh Hai, one of the building's security guards.
Shortly after the fire broke out, fire fighting forces arrived in five specialised vehicles and brought the fire under control in just over three hours.
"We think the fire was started by a short circuit from the second floor of the building, which houses a lot of technological equipment, and smoke was channelled through a pipe to the rest of the floors", said a fire fightering official.
"Smoke spread all over the building through stairways and air vents. We we had to ask all apartment owners to open their doors and windows to let the smoke out", he added.
Police are investigating the exact cause of the fire and the extend of the damage.
This has been the 8th fire case in Ha Noi since the beginning of this year. _VNS
