Heavy floods forecast for Lao Cai Province

LAO CAI — Severe flooding is forecast for upstream areas of northern mountainous Lao Cai Province following large-scale rain during the past few days, according to provincial Hydro-meteorological Centre deputy director Luu Minh Hai.

On Tuesday, the water level at Hong (Red) and Nam Thi rivers hit a peak for the year and are expected to rise further.

Rain is forecast to continue for two days.

Ovarian cyst removed from teenage girl

LAO CAI — A 14-year-old Mong girl has recovered from surgery to remove a 4.2kg ovarian cyst at Bat Xat District Hospital in northern Lao Cai Province.

According to the hospital's director, Mai Xuan Thuy, it was rare for ovarian cysts to affect such young girls.

The two-hour surgery will not affect her reproductive ability, the doctor said.

The cyst was reported to have developed three months ago.

Fire ravages central Nghe An timber factory

NGHE AN — Thousands of tonnes of timber at Cong Dung Hoa Timber Factory in the central province of Nghe An's Dong Nam Industrial Zone were damaged in a fire yesterday.

The fire was extinguished in about two hours by about 100 firefighters and company workers.

The fire is reported to have spread from a wood drying area.

Damage has not been estimated. Cause of fire is under investigation. — VNS
