Indian pop legend Usha Uthup comes to town for Diwali fest

(09-11-2007)

HCMCITY — Usha Uthup, one of India’s most popular divas of the last three decades, will sing in HCM City this weekend during celebrations to mark Diwali, the largest Hindu festival.

She will belt out many of her hits in Indian, English and other foreign languages, including Spanish, Italian, Swahili, Russian, and Chinese.

For her performance in the city, Usha is undergoing a crash course in Vietnamese in Kolkata, hoping to sing Vietnamese songs with passion.

She says learning the language will help her understand the song’s meaning and the emotions involved.

Usha has to her credit over 200 albums besides soundtracks for 150 Hindi and regional films.

With her trademark passion and speed of delivery, she has just completed a brand new studio album and is set to release it during the course of the year.

Accolades have come from all over the world and she has sung for prime ministers and presidents. Indira Gandhi and African leaders Jomo Kenyatta, Daniel Arap Moi and, more recently, Nelson Mandela have all been admirers.

The show, part of a bigger festival organised by the Indian Business Chamber in Viet Nam and its partners, will take place at 7pm on Sunday at the Sheraton Hotel, Dong Khoi Street, District 1. For tickets for the festival, which will also include Uthup’s concert, contact the chamber on 8238132 . — VNS
