HA NOI (VNS)— A fossilised tusk, recently found in Phu Thien District, 30km from the Ham Rong volcano in the Central Highland province of Gia Lai, has been dated to about 19,450 BC.
It was found by Nguyen Truong Son from the Viet Nam Scientific and Technical Association of Forestry, is 1.26m long and weighs 24kg.
Son said that it was likely that the fossil was only half of a tusk. The whole tusk may have been 2.7m long.
Son, who has worked on preservation of endangered animals, received approval from the provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism to keep the fossil for further research. — VNS
