Son songs stay in spotlight

Update: November, 20/2012 - 10:05

HCM CITY (VNS)— The fifth episode of In the Spotlight, a series of live music performances organised by a local entertainment and advertising company, will focus on late composer Trinh Cong Son.

According to organisers, the performances, to be held late next month and early January, will be called Goi Ten Bon Mua (Telling the Name of Four Seasons).

They said the programme would present, to some extent, the musical thoughts of Trinh Cong Son through the voices of four singers – Tuan Ngoc, My Linh, Hong Nhung and Tung Duong.

Son's works will not be presented in any chronological order, but music director Hong Lien will "paint a musical picture revealing different states of emotion, like the four seasons of spring, summer, autumn and winter".

The performance will include famous songs like Diem Xua (Bygone Diem), Ru Ta Ngam Ngui (Lulled in Companionable Sadness), Xin Mat Troi Ngu Yen (Sun, Please Sleep Soundly), Tinh Nho (Missing My Love) and Nhin Nhung Mua Thu Di (Seeing Autumns Leaving) – sung in a "different way".

One highlight of the programme will be a duet by Tuan Ngoc and Tung Duong, bringing together two generations and two different styles.

Performing seven songs that he has never sung before, Tung Duong said he will sing Son's music in his own style, one that has been described as stormy, passionate and dreamlike.

The programme will also see a collaboration between the Anh Em (Brothers) band led by musician Anh Quan, the Best Friends band of musician Hoai Sa, a string orchestra from Viet Nam National Symphony Orchestra and the HCM City Conservatory of Music.

"This shows the respect due to Trinh Cong Son's music," music director Lien said. The Trinh Cong Son special also celebrates the first anniversary of In the Spotlight, launched in early January by My Thanh Co Ltd.

It will take place at the Hoa Binh Theatre in HCM City on December 22 and at the Cultural Friendship Palace in Ha Noi on January 3 and 4. — VNS
