Celebrations planned for poet’s birthday

The 240th birthday celebrations of Nguyen Du, Viet Nam’s great writer, will be held throughout the country, including his native land in central Ha Tinh Province, on December 3.

According to Ha Van Thach, deputy chairman of the Ha Tinh People’s Committee, a library named after Nguyen Du will be thrown open to public in Cam Xuyen Commune, Duc Tho District, as part of celebrations.

The library will have 1,500 book titles, including 500 copies of Nguyen Du’s Kieu Story, published during various periods, from about 200 years ago.

Documents and personal memorabilia of Nguyen Du will be displayed at his native village of Tien Dien in Nghi Xuan District, Thach said.

Other activities planned include a recital of Nguyen Du’s poems and folk songs of Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Thua Thien-Hue, Quang Nam, Bac Ninh, Thai Binh, western and southern regions, the deputy chairman said. A grand ceremony will be held on December 3 at Ha Tinh’s central region culture centre.

Meanwhile, the capital city has planned a Nguyen Du poem day, a seminar on research, preservation and developing Nguyen Du’s valuable cultural heritage and the Nguyen lineage in Tien Dien.

Nguyen Tri Nguyen, deputy director of the Institute for Culture and Information, said thousands of pages have been written on Nguyen Du and his Kieu poems since the world celebrated Nguyen Du’s 200th birthday in 1965.

Around 60 papers, especially one by a South Korean scholar Ahn Kyong-hwan, who translated Kieu into Korean language, will be presented at the seminar, Nguyen said .

The seminar will review the writer’s literary contributions, influence on the national culture, and Nguyen Du scholarship.

The Government has approved a proposal by the Ministry of Culture and Information and Ha Tinh People’s Committee to build a Nguyen Du culture and tourism site in Tien Dien Commune. — VNS
