QUANG NINNH (VNS) — Animals Asia Foundation has successfully rescued a 70kg female horse bear, in Thuong Yen Cong Village of Quang Ninh Northern Province.

After receiving the message from Quang Ninh province's Rangers last week, the organisation prepared the equipment and sent experts, doctors and staff of the Vietnam Bear Rescue Centre to rescue the animal named Honey, the next day.

Since May 11 last year, 35 bears have died in Quang Ninh Province. Besides, the 17 bears rescued by Animals Asia Foundation, the province still has 16 in captivity.

As the number of dead bears has increased sharply for various reasons, including old age and poor care condition, the provincial authorities and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development have requested that the bears be urgently transferred to the Vietnam Bear Rescue Centre.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, 700 bears died in Viet Nam in 2014 and currently 1,245 horse bears have been kept in captivity. — VNS
