DONG NAI — Police in Dong Nai Province are conducting an investigation into the operation of an unlicensed landfill in Bien Hoa City that has discharged its waste into rivers and canals for two years.
The province's environment police said the 1.5-ha landfill owned by Hoang Bich Lien of Bien Hoa had polluted both groundwater and surface water.
Lien said she accepted both hazardous and non-hazardous substances, including used cans or tanks containing oil and chemicals as well as other materials like industrial waste, auto tyres, plastic bags and shoe debris, among others.
Lien told the police she had bought the waste from Hoang Gia Company in Tay Ninh Province, Poh Huat Ltd Co in Dong Nai Province's Long Thanh District and Vina G7 Ltd Co in Bien Hoa City.
Lien said she sorted the waste and sold much of it to recycling companies.
The rest of the waste, which included hazardous materials as well as shoe scraps from shoe factories, was burned and buried at her landfill.
To clear the landfill to make way for more waste, Lien used bulldozers to transfer some of the collected waste into canals, rivers, streams or sunken land sites.
The police are continuing their investigation. — VNS
