HCM CITY — HCM City’s Young Businesspeople Association organised its 6th congress yesterday to review its activities during the last three years and planning for the next three.

The association (YBA) groups 470 young entrepreneurs, including 260 who became members in the last three years, who have invested VND11 trillion (US$700 million) and created 50,000 jobs in and around the city.

"The association carried out many tasks to improve the capabilities of city enterprises as they face globalisation," Vo Quoc Thang, its chairman, said.

It had organised for its members professional training courses, trade promotions, meetings with international trade organisations of Malaysia, the Philippines, Cambodia, Denmark, Shanghai, Singapore, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, Belgium, the US, and Australia.

Its website, www.yabhcm.com, scored 260,000 hits.

Thanks to all this, 12 member-enterprises had received the Red Star award, 59 the Vietnamese Golden Star prize, and 39 the best young businesspeople in HCM City award.

YBA had given away over VND1.8 billion ($113,000) to charity.

"[It] will become a member of the International Young Businesspersons Association next year," Thang said.

Nguyen Thanh Tai, vice chairman of HCM City’s People Committee, told the congress: "The city warmly appreciates the YBA’s achievements and promises to provide a healthy business environment for young businesspersons to develop."

Vo Quoc Thang, general director of Dong Tam Enamelled tile company, was re-elected chairman of the association for 2006-2009. He vowed to work towards strengthening the professionalism and competitiveness of businesses.

"We plan to set up a joint-stock company under our association to do business in real estate and promote international trade. By 2009, [YBA’s] membership will be doubled, to around 1,000," he said.

At the congress, nine members were given the best young businesspersons in HCM City 2006 awards by HCM City’s Youth Union. — VNS
