QUANG TRI (VNS) — Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has decided to form a 24,000ha economic zone in the central Quang Tri Province to utilise local potential and the bustling trade with neigbouring Laos.
The Quang Tri southeastern economic zone will have functional areas such as an industrial park, an administration centre, residential areas and a tourism complex, besides a port and logistics zone.
The 23,792ha economic zone will be spread across 17 towns and communes in the province's Hai Lang, Trieu Phong, and Gio Linh districts. Most of these localities have urban infrastructure, while some are coastal places with beaches and ports.
The zone will be on a coastal stretch that borders Thua Thien - Hue Province and National Highway 49, running from the Laos border and connected to two busy border gates of Lao Bao and La Lay.
The economic zone is expected to exploit fully its natural and geo-economic location near the East West Economic Corridor that connects Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and Viet Nam.
The government will also aim to use it to provide an impetus to the development of the northern-central region, which is less developed than the other regions of the country.
As a long-term strategy, the economic zone will serve as a regional industrial hub for agroproduct processing, and construction material and electricity production.
The government wants key industrial sectors to be based in the zone, especially those that can boost the sustainable development of the region and ensure stable jobs for local residents.
This is the second economic zone to be formed in Quang Tri, after the Lao Bao Economic and Commercial Zone that was set up in 2005 in the southwestern part of the province. — VNS
