Nguyen Ha Dong appears on the list of top 10 Internet millionaires who made money out of thin air on American entertainment website The Richest.
HA NOI (VNS)  — American entertainment website TheRichest has listed Nguyen Ha Dong, the Vietnamese creator of the Flappy Bird game, among the top 10 Internet millionaires who made money out of thin air.

According to the website, the Flappy Bird game was downloaded more than 50 million times and rated more than 90,000 times throughout its almost nine-month existence, making it one of the most addictive games in recent memory. "It made Dong, now in his 30s[MdL1] , approximately US$3 million. [It is] not an incredible amount, especially for this list. But what sets it apart is that it earned that profit in just 60 days," it explained.

The list also included Matthew Mullenweg, creator of the free and open source blogging tool WordPress, and David Karp, founder of the microblogging platform Tumblr.

Released in May 2013, the game got lost in the shuffle amongst thousands of other apps and failed to gain any attraction. Eight months later, however, it inexplicably went viral.

The game is quite simple: A player has to tap the screen to propel a tiny bird upwards. If the bird hits any of the green pipes blocking its way while flying towards the finish line, the game is over.

Dong said Flappy Bird was popular because it stood out from the other mobile games and was a good game to be played against friends.

Ultimately earning Dong US$50,000 per day, Flappy Bird turned its creator into a millionaire almost overnight. His decision to take it down was met with incredulity across the world, but the dividends of the game's legacy had already been paid in spades. — VNS
