HCM CITY — HCM City Department of Natural Resources and Environment and the Sai Gon Giai Phong (Librated Sai Gon) newspaper launched HCM City's third biennial award for "green" businesses on Tuesday.
The award encourages businesses to implement environmentally sound practices and honours them for going green.
The departments of finance, science and technology, industry and trade, HCM City export processing and industrial zone authority and HCM city business association, and environmental journalists will collaborate to assess businesses for the award.
Businesses in all sectors in HCM City are encouraged to send applications for categories including excellent "green" business, most environment-friendly product, most advanced waste treatment, and most effective recycling.
The organising board will conduct site visits to each business that enters and also assess their application and remarks from environmental journalists, said Pham Duc Hien, Sai Gon Giai Phong newspaper's deputy editor-in-chief.
"The award would be legally valid for two years. If within that time, the business violates environmental regulations the award will be withdrawn," he said.
In 2006 and 2008, 11 businesses were given green titles but this year there would not be a limit on the number of awards for businesses that fulfill the green criteria, said Phung Thi Ai Van, the organising board's coordinator.
The prize money amount has not yet been announced. — VNS
