Singapore minister tours industrial park

BINH DUONG — Singapore Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew on Saturday visited the Viet Nam-Singapore Industrial Park near HCM City that he initiated more than a decade ago.

The former prime minister, accompanied by a delegation of senior officials and entrepreneurs, visited its showroom where he got an insight into its remarkable growth since being set up in 1996.

Park officials too briefed him on how the 500ha facility had evolved since its establishment as a government-to-government project between Viet Nam and Singapore.

The park is a joint venture between a Singapore consortium led by Sembcorp Industries and Becamex, a Vietnamese State-owned construction services company.

It has attracted investments from 22 countries worth more than US$1.5 billion and employs over 40,000 people.

Japan is the leading investor, followed by Taiwan and Singapore.

The park houses a high-tech cluster each for the electronics, automotive, and pharmaceuticals industries.

Lee later held talks with leaders of Binh Duong Province. — VNS
